To celebrate the milestone, on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Ton-Up Records will release an archival video of the band performing the album’s title song, Poison Love, and it will be available on the band’s official YouTube channel. Filmed at Club Lingerie in Los Angeles, California, the venue, like Blood on the Saddle, played a significant role in shaping the city’s alternative/underground scene. This will be followed by a digital release on Friday, April 24, 2026, of a single featuring an alternate mix of the song, as well as “A Step Away,” which appeared on the original release.
Stephenson (Bass). The band is currently working on a new album.

This segment is part of a series of follow-up interviews with bands from the iO Productions show, “MusiCalifornia.” The show was a half-hour monthly program that documented the 1980s, Los Angeles “underground” music scene. Filmed in mid-town Manhattan, New York, and directed by Eddie Star, the video is the visual companion to Kelly’s debut single, released four years ago this week. It captures the song’s comic book superhero theme with the edgy metropolitan look of Batman’s Gotham City or Superman’s Metropolis.

The single “Savior” showcases Philip Paul Kelly’s signature vocal style and captures his distinctive ability to draw the listener into the song. Recorded live at New York’s Triad Theater during the elevated staged reading of “Rockquiem For A Wrestler,” in June of 2020, Philip Paul Kelly brings a blistering intensity and menace, capturing the spontaneity that is rock-n-roll.

“I had a blast working with Philip on this project! Philip really came into his own as an artist during the “Rockquiem For A Wrestler” project. I had the opportunity to perform in the show, and he blew me away with his version of my song. He brought out something different in “Savior,” and I think it is reflected in the video we made,” said Eddie Star.

“Savior” by Philip Paul Kelly is available as a single on music streaming services and is on the live cast recording of Philip Paul Kelly’s Rock-n-Roll Wrestling Spectacle, “Rockquiem For A Wrestler,” available on CD and everywhere music is streamed.

Often described as Neil Diamond meets The Phantom of the Opera, Philip Paul Kelly’s most recent release is his version of the Roy Orbison classic “Only the Lonely,” and “Come Close,” a ballad released in April 2025, available on all music services.

“That’s good news about our theme song. I’m proud of it. Single Girl is a traditional song, and Do You Wanna Dance is a light-hearted duet, but Blood on the Saddle is my battle cry to the world,” said Blood on the Saddle’s founder, Greg Davis, regarding the release.
The video was filmed in Santa Monica in the fall of 1983 for the Los Angeles cable TV show “LA IN.” It was broadcast before the critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, released in March 1984, which appeared on Chris Willman‘s Los Angeles Times “Top Albums of 1984.”
Spin Magazine described the band as “A high-energy fusion that doesn’t sound like punk or country. (Blood on the Saddle) is doing something new and a half twist different from what has gone before.”
Formed in early 1983 by guitar virtuoso Greg Davis, who had the idea of combining bluegrass with punk rock, he was joined by bass player Ron Botelho and drummer Hermann Senac. Annette Zilinskas, bass player for The Bangles, joined Blood on the Saddle in July of 1983 as co-lead vocalist, completing the original line-up of the band. Considered one of the most influential bands to emerge from the Los Angeles Country Punk scene, the band’s history was partially documented in the recent authorized biography of The Bangles and in John Doe and Tom DeSavia‘s 2019 book, More Fun in the New World.
Blood on the Saddle’s recent release, “First Blood,” a compilation of early recordings and acoustic demos, was released May 31, 2024, on Ton-Up Records. The band has released eleven albums and is credited with laying the foundation of the Alternative Country and Rock genres in the 90s. The band’s current lineup is Greg Davis (Vocals, Guitar), Dave Frappier (Drums), and John K. Stephenson (Bass), and they are currently working on a new album.

Written in 2017, the song captures a certain yearning and melancholy that sometimes prevails during the holiday season. The late Scottish singer, songwriter, and musician rose to fame in the early 1970s as the front-man of The Marmalade with their worldwide hit “Reflections of My Life,” recently covered by Belinda Carlisle of the Go-Gos.
Born in Airdrie, Scotland, singer/songwriter Dean Ford joined The Gaylords in 1963 after Junior Campbell and Pat Fairley saw him perform with The Monarchs at the Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow. The band changed its name to “The Marmalade” in 1966, and Jimi Hendrix called their song “I See The Rain” “The Best Cut of 1967.” Marmalade was the first Scottish band to hit number one on the UK Singles Chart, and the band charted ten additional times, including the worldwide hit “Reflections of My Life,” written by Ford and Campbell. The original band broke up in 1975.
Ford released his self-titled solo album, produced by Alan Parsons, in 1975. He made an appearance on Parsons’ 1978 album ‘Pyramid,’ and recorded with his former bandmate, Hugh Nicholson.
BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) honored Ford and Campbell in 1998 for “Reflections of My Life.” He appeared with The Sensational Alex Harvey Band for an album tribute to Glaswegian Frankie Miller (2003), and collaborated with former Badfinger Guitarist Joe Tansin on an album, ‘Paradise Cove’ (2012)
Music industry veteran Dan Matovina began working with Ford in 2015. Matovina reissued his debut album and helped Ford put together his 2017 release ‘Feel My Heartbeat,’ with producer Fernando Perdomo. Ford recorded one last album, ‘This Scottish Heart, released two months before he passed away in 2018. Dean Ford was a true original who left an enduring music legacy that continues to engage fans worldwide.
